"I have been reading aloud to my kids for years and I wasn't sure there'd be much else to add to the experience but goodness, I'm so pleased to be proved wrong! This adds so much to their reading comprehension and is keeping them engaged and literally asking for just one more chapter."

If there's one book I remember from my own "big-kid reading era," it's Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. It's a powerful story of the relationship between a boy and his pair of hunting hounds. You'll follow Billy from puppy-sickness, to bringing home and training his dogs, on hunting adventures, and finally through the heartbreak of loss. Because of the powerful emotional content of the book (animal death), we think it’s best for listeners ages 9 and up, but you know your kids best.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is a moving story of friendship, beautifully told. The story is narrated by Ivan, a gorilla living in a run-down shopping mall exhibit. When Ruby, a baby elephant, comes to join him, Ivan makes a promise to save her from life in the mall. If you haven't yet experienced this award-winning book, you're in for a treat! As with all our Read-Aloud Posters, the activities on our poster for The One and Only Ivan are a mix of novel and familiar activities created specifically to highlight particular aspects of the book and help readers delve a little deeper into the story. Our Spotlight blog post examines both the novel aspects of the poster reviews activities that might seem familiar to you if you’ve completed other Read-Aloud Posters.
